You usually do not need foreign investment approval to purchase New Zealand residential or commercial real estate.
Approval may be required by the Overseas Investment Commission for the following categories:
a. rural land outside a city boundary that is more than 5 hectares (12.3 acres)
b. non-residential waterfront/coastal land
c. land considered to be of historic significance.
